Heavy-Load Mine Haul Road — Large Gold Mine (Zijin Group), China: Flexible Pavement Film-Forming Technology

Zijin Mining Group is one of the world’s leading gold and copper mining groups and a representative operator of the international non-ferrous mining industry. Headquartered in China, with mining operations and projects spanning multiple continents, this project is set on a heavy-load haul road serving one of Zijin’s large gold mines.

A heavy-load mine haul road renewed with GR flexible pavement film-forming technology. Located in a high-moisture mountainous area with a pronounced rainy season, the road has to keep serving very heavy traffic through demanding wet-season conditions. The renovation was carried out by MiningRoad New Materials Co., Ltd.  

The operating challenge

The treated route serves some of the harshest duties found on heavy-load mine roads:

• On the busiest stretches, traffic reaches roughly 2,000 vehicle-passes per day.

• The road is used mainly by wide-body mining trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 100–140 tonnes.

• One stretch includes a 180° switchback on a significant grade, where loaded trucks climb at full weight and turn in a tight hairpin — one of the most punishing loading cases for pavement.

  
  

The GR solution

A flexible pavement structure was applied over the prepared, compacted base to a design film thickness of 30–40 mm. The treatment forms a stable, water-resistant, load-bearing running surface that keeps the mine road drivable under repeated heavy, wet-season loading and is straightforward to maintain.

Result

After the renovation was reopened, the haul road became level and stable. The previous dust and wet-weather usability problems were clearly reduced, and wide-body mining trucks now run it as part of normal operation. The surface is built for the long term and requires less routine effort to maintain, improving haul efficiency and the working environment on this busy mine road.

GR will keep tracking this demonstration stretch over the medium and long term, using real operating data to document the long-term value of flexible pavement film-forming technology on extreme heavy-load mine roads.
